Ultimate Edition looks like your rose-tinted memories of the original game. The effect is subtle but noticeable if you compare the versions side by side.
But this new version includes thousands of retouched art assets. The original Gears of War, Epic's launch showpiece for the now-ubiquitous Unreal Engine 3, was already an HD game. The most obvious upgrade is the enhanced graphics. It's a solid game, but I would have liked to see a more-thorough facelift. The core game mostly holds up, even if its breakthroughs have lost some of their luster. With Gears of War 4 over a year away, Microsoft has remastered the first game as Gears of War: Ultimate Edition ($39.99) for the Xbox One to help build hype. Although the first Gears of War was a hugely innovative, forward-thinking take on the third-person shooter when it arrived in 2005 on the Xbox 360, two sequels and one spin-off later, today it's a respected piece of history. Nine years might as well be an eternity in video game time.
